Ed Stone, Editor and Son
In 1946, named after my father, I was born Edmund J. Austin Stone in a small town in Wales, called Abergavenny. In 1949, the family moved to Malvern and after graduating, I worked with the Morgan Motor Company for 2 years and then later, at Stone-Platt Ltd. as an electrical inspector. In 1968, I married my fiancee, Valerie, at the Malvern Priory Church. The same year we moved to Crawley, Sussex - still working for Stone-Platt Ltd. In 1972, having been promoted to regional sales manager, we moved to Market Drayton in Shropshire.
In 1974, for varying reasons, my wife, 2 children and I decided to emigrate to Canada. While still working in the electrical industry, I had always wanted to work for myself and in 1988, I formed my own company Compu-Power Controls. During this time, Valerie and I have lived in the Fraser Valley of BC. Since our daughter had moved back to the UK in 1974, we have travelled back annually to visit with her, the grandchildren and other family members and friends.
Like most people, for many years I had wondered about my direct ancestry - especially as, other than my parents, I did not have many family connections or knowledge of ancestors beyond my mother and father.
After semi-retiring in 2014, I joined my local genealogy group, with the hopes of getting a better idea to the process of finding out more about ‘tracking‘ down lost ancestors etc. In addition, I joined Ancestry.co.uk, in order to build my family tree with any details found. As a result, I found that my direct Stone family came from a small town in East Sussex called Framfield. Many of these distant ancestors were buried in Framfield’s St.Thomas Becket Church where, the Hempstead Chapel, built in 1288, refers to the atte Stone’s being gentry in the local community, living near or at ‘StoneBridge’ near Framfield.
Note: The atte portion of the name was later dropped in the mid 1500’s. My 8th great grandfather, Nicholas Stone, owned the iron foundry at Pounsley, near Framfield which provided guns and cannon used against the Spanish Armada in 1588 and then later during the English Civil War in 1642.
